AWARDS
1. GAWAD CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES PARA SA SINING (CCP AWARDS FOR THE ARTS) 1991 FOR LITERATURE. FEBRUARY 26, 1991.
Citation:
JUAN S.P. HIDALGO, JR., Ilokano novelist, short story writer, poet, editor, and translator, is a pillar of Philippine Literature in Iloko. At a time when Philippine vernacular literature was shunned by the educated class, Hidalgo endeavored to elevate Iloko literature to the standards of world classics. Acknowledged as the father of modern Iloko writing, Hidalgo wrote fiction and poetry that combined probing insights into the human psyche and society with mythic storytelling and symbolic imagery.
Hidalgo’s short stories and poems, as well as novels serialized in the Bannawag, have been widely anthologized and translated into Filipino, English and other languages. In his book, Bituen Ti Rosales Ken Dadduma Pay A Sarita, he immortalized in vivid local color the places of his itinerary childhood and the setting of engagement with life as a young adult as he yearned for self-mastery and adventure.
He initiated the formation of writer’s organizations in various localities, the best known of which is the Gunglo dagiti Mannurat nga Ilokano iti Filipinas (Association of Ilokano Writers of the Philippines) or GUMIL which has chapters on the municipal, provincial, national, and international levels. His idea of cooperative publishing has taken root among his fellow writers and yielded a wealth of books of Iloko writing.
