Obama Sonnets
Sonnet (01.22.09)
the O factor failed to bring the expected
lift to depressed global markets.
–wires, quoting chris bennet, senior
trader at MF Global unit ChoiceOdds
in london.
the sector of finance remains indeed
still at the center of the crisis, still
unleashing ripples from some mighty bleed,
through nation’s borders with some wrenching chill.
and banks, in nearly all the nations, keep
their struggles in a higher gear, all high
in hopes they’d stay there up some board, that weep
they never may and clients may not cry.
with job cuts now a ruthless bulldog’s eyes,
and housing market steady on a dive,
recession waves a blade against the lies
some people say the worst shall not arrive.
there’s no recession, many claim, but then
the eyes can’t be deceived by a liar’s pen.

Sonnet (01.22.09)
but know this, america — they faced (the problems
by the us of a) will be met.
–barack obama, in his inaugural address
as the 44th US president on jan 20, 2009
(past midnight jan 21, 2009 philippine time).
them mighty words indeed, said firmly by
the man who earlier roared that he would be
the leader of the nation of the free
and mighty — and that none should ever cry.
he said the words, in any language, strong
with vibrant echoes of resolve and hope;
the crafted words had formed a cure-all dope,
they formed the lyrics of a soothing song.
but he, the man who took his oath, was right –
no, he could not be wrong at all — without
a watchful eye the market could well spin
out of control, and that would bring some fright.
all hopes would then be lost within the bout –
the words had failed to save a fallen chin.
