Sonnet (09.23.08)
Ni Honor Blanco Cabie
the rains tonight and i share one thing i
must keep, the one thing i will alwaysa hold,
with pride and reasons, like some bar of gold
that has my guardianship and wary eye.
for rains, as i have known them way back in
an earlier vale and clime, provide the earth
the nourishment it needs — and that’s its mirth,
its comprehensive joy that makes a din.
and i, much like the rains that fall tonight
across the dusty vacant lots here in
the city, give my best each time i make
a move, a move that underscores my might.
this axiom gives me indeed a robust chin,
a potent cup that soothes whatever ache.
