The rise of the novel is tied to objective changes in Philippine society. The late nineteenth century is the key seminal period in the growth of the Filipino novel. Empirical tendencies…became more fully expressed. Economic changes in the colony, the holder intrusion of the contemporary world through the developments in trade and travel and the agency of a better-informed intelligentsia, the changing content of the European world itself, the emergence of native printing and publishing; these factors shaped a mileu which favored the rise of the novel.
